Advice, Anyone?

Ok, I'm open to suggestions as to how to get a child to go to sleep at night. Our little fellow has incredible stamina and is really determined to do everything to prevent him from falling asleep. The last two evenings, it has been around 10 pm before he finally gave up the fight. We even start the bed time process at 8:30 pm! And, the kicker is that he has also gotten up before 7 am the following mornings. I've read ALOT, googled ALOT, but haven't found something that has worked well. It's just too much. And, from what I have read, he physically needs more sleep than this anyway. If you have any thoughts on the matter, please share!
Also, we want to wish Ferd a very happy birthday - it was actually yesterday!
Joseph started swimming lessons at the Y too! Believe it or not, "Fearless Joe" was somewhat timid around the instructor and other children. He wanted to go to the deep end of the pool and swim by himself. He managed to throw himself in, sans floaties and had to be helped by the teacher. He finally warmed up to her and did pretty well when she held him in the water. We have 3 more lessons this week. I'll keep you posted. I wanted to take a picture, but it has been too hectic thus far. Brian's going to take him today because I have my weekly check-in for the baby. Talk with you later!
